Women’s eNews Announces 21 Leaders for the 21st Century Honorees (East Coast)

NEW YORK (WOMENSENEWS) –Women’s eNews is pleased to announce it will honor outstanding women, men and organizations at its annual ’21 Leaders for the 21st Century’ East Coast Awards Gala on Monday May 8, 2017, in New York City. This year’s honorees are:

Congresswoman Carolyn Maloney, D-NY-12 (Keynote Speaker). Maloney is a senior member of both the House Financial Services Committee and the House Oversight and Government Reform Committee, and the Ranking House member of the Joint Economic Committee.

Ambassador Alice Dear, Women’s eNews Board Chair. President Bill Clinton appointed the former international banker, with unanimous consent of the Senate, as U.S. Executive Director of the African Development Bank, Africa’s premier financing institution where she served at headquarters in Abidjan, Cote d’Ivoire from 1994-2000. Dear represents Alpha Kappa Alpha Sorority, Inc. at the United Nations in Consultative-Status to the Economic and Social Council, serves on the International Planning Committee of Global Summit of Women and is a member of the Council on Foreign Relations.

Wendy Diamond, Founder of Animal Fair Media. Diamond is also the Founder of the United Nations’ Women’s Entrepreneurship Day, held annually on Nov. 19 and celebrated in over 144 countries. She is also the recipient of the Ellis Island Medal of Honor (2016).

Executive Women for Her, a coalition of leaders working together to ensure the election of progressive congressional and state candidates in upcoming elections. Its co-founders are: Jennifer Allyn (Managing Director in the Office of Diversity, PricewaterhouseCoopers LLP); Rachel Cheeks-Givan (Global Director, Diversity and Inclusion, Pfizer); Carol Evans (President Emeritus, Working Mother Media); Sherrye Henry (former Director of the Small Business Association’s Office of Women’s Business Ownership); and Betty Spence (President, National Association of Female Executives-NAFE).

Mariam Jalabi, Director for the National Coalition of Syrian Revolution and Opposition Forces’ Representative Office to the United Nations. Jalabi is also one of the founding members of the Syrian Non-violence Movement (SNVM).

Michael Kimmel, SUNY Distinguished Professor of Sociology and Gender Studies. Kimmel is the Founder and Editor of the academic journal, Men and Masculinities, and Founder of the Center for the Study of Men and Masculinities. He is also author of “Guyland” and “Angry White Men.”

Lenora Lapidus, Director, Women’s Rights Project, American Civil Liberties Union (ACLU). In this role, Lapidus and her team argue for women’s equal employment and educational opportunities, and for putting an end to discrimination against victims of violence in U.S. federal and state courts.

Jessica Neuwirth, Founder and Director of the ERA Coalition, co-founder of the international women’s rights organization Equality Now, and Founder/Director of Donor Direct Action, an initiative to support women’s rights organizations around the world. She is the author of “Equal Means Equal: Why the Time for an Equal Rights Amendment Is Now.”

Rosa Rios, 43rd Treasurer of the United States. Rios is known for initiating and leading the efforts to place a portrait of a woman on the front of U.S. currency for the first time in the nation’s history, and continuing her work to honor historic American women. Rios is also the Founder of Empowerment 2020, a movement supporting advancement of women and girls.

Beth Shipp, Executive Director, LPAC Her organization builds the political power of lesbians by electing candidates that champion LGBT rights, women’s equality and social justice. Previously, Shipp served as the Political Director of NARAL Pro-Choice America.

Emer Timmons, Chief Marketing Officer and President of Strategic Sales at Brightstar Corp. Timmons is also Co-chair of the “Men As Change Agents” working group at the Women’s Business Council, UK. She is the recipient of the UK Women in IT Awards: Woman of the Year, 2015.

Carol Zimmer, Award-winning Journalist and Radio and Television Producer. Zimmer has covered politics, the United Nations, women’s issues and the economy for the NBC and CBS Radio networks, National Public Radio and Bloomberg News. She is the recipient of the Edward R. Murrow Award, the 2014 New York Press Club Special Reporting Award and the 2015 Excellence in Financial Journalism Award.

The East Coast Awards Gala will take place on the evening of May 8 in New York City at Club 101 on Park Avenue.
