This Week’s Activities @ WRC:

 

Quad Day & Taste of Nevada Street

Sunday August 24

The Quad @ 12 – 4pm. Come out for a day of learning about any and every Registered Student Organization on the Illinois campus. Campus offices and local organizations will also be lining the Main Quad for you to get a taste of how diverse the university is and what it has to offer. With over 650 RSOs present, you are bound to find something you are interested in.

Nevada Street | Urbana @ 4:00 – 6pm. Following Quad Day, head over to the Taste of Nevada at 4:00pm. Join us in a chance to connect with the University’s cultural centers! The Women’s Resources Center will be at the Taste of Nevada! Performances by Hathaways, Djibril Camara and the West African Dancers, and Frank and Sam, Native American hip-hop artists and fancydancers! Food provided includes samosas, catfish nuggets, mac n’ cheese, lychee jelly, paletas, quesadillas, freshly-based cookies, and more! Don’t miss out on this amazing opportunity to kick off the semester!

 

 

 

 

MondayAugust 25 @ NOON @ Women’s Resources Center – Dish It Up | Of Fairies and Fiends: The Magical Other in Grimms’ Fairy Talesfeaturing Stephanie Birch, Masters Student, Graduate School of Library and Information Science and African Studies. Come join us for another Dish It Up Lunch on Us Program at the Women’s Resources Center (every 2nd and 4th Monday at noon). Enjoy a complimentary meal while listening to speakers, lecturers, and panelists explore a variety of topics at the intersection of gender and other social identities. Dish It Up and the Lunch on Us Programs from OIIR offer a unique opportunity to engage with your peers in a fruitful discussion of identity, social phenomena, and justice on campus. Each Dish It Up program offers vegan and vegetarian food options. Should you require any additional accommodations (assistance with food and seating, large print programs, ASL interpreter, visual/audio assistance, etc.), please contact us at your earliest convenience. PAID FOR BY THE STUDENT CULTURAL PROGRAMMING FEE.

 

ThursdaySeptember 4 @ 6:00-8:00 PM @ Women’s Resources Center – Welcome Back(yard) BBQ Join the Women’s Resources Center and Career Center staff and students for a Welcome Back BBQ featuring picnic foods, games, music, and dancing in the Arcade Courtyard behind the Financial Aid Office! Following the BBQ, we’ll also have a Quad Film Screening beginning at 8pm! Don’t miss out on an evening of fun and a chance to kick back and celebrate the beginning of another year on campus!

 

ThursdaySeptember 4 @ 8:00 PM @ Anniversary Plaza (Quad Side of Union, Women’s Resource Center if there is rain) –Outdoor Film Screening: Pitch Perfect Join us for an outdoor screening of Pitch Perfect in front of Anniversary Plaza (quad-side of the Illini Union)! Grab some friends, pack some snacks and a blanket, and cozy up. Free and open to the public! *Closed captioning will be provided. Synopsis: “Becca, a freshman at Barden University, is cajoled into joining The Bellas, her school’s all-girls singing group. Injecting some much needed energy into their repertoire, The Bellas take on their male rivals in a campus competition.” RAIN LOCATION: If we encounter rain, we’ll be screening this at the Women’s Resources Center! (703 S. Wright St. 2nd Floor, Champaign).

 

Events This Week @ OIIR Cultural Centers/Units:

 

BNAACC Relocation

August 15 through September 15 –  Pack Up BNAACC @ Bruce D. Nesbitt African American Cultural Center. Join us as we pack up 45 years of history and move to our new location.

Dear Students, Staff, Community Members and friends of the Bruce D. Nesbitt African American Cultural Center (BNAACC). We send a very special“WELCOME” to our first-year Illini! We are currently transitioning from our current 708 South Mathews Avenue facility in Urbana, Illinois to our new temporary location at 51 East Gregory Drive in Champaign, Illinois. We are excited about the prospects of our new space, and we invite you to visit us when we are settled.  BNAACC Staff and students will be present at the Mathews Avenue location for “Taste of Nevada” on Sunday August 24, 2014. Additionally, we will be operational at the “old” facility until the end of the business day on Monday August 25, 2014. Staff can still be reached at the main line (217) 333-2092; however, there may be a temporary discontinuance of phone service as we transport the center’s telephones the morning of Tuesday August 26, 2014. Please note that while we are transitioning our summer hours will remain in effect (Monday – Friday, 9:00am-5:00pm). We thank you for your patience and apologize for any inconveniences.

 

Wake Up Call

Bruce D. Nesbitt African American Cultural Center (BNAACC) and 100 STRONG Retention Program invite you to join us at the 9th Annual Wake Up Call. Wake Up Call is a forum on topics relevant to the African American experience @ Illinois via lectures, multimedia, spoken word and music.
