When they called the band Pussy Riot and began performing in-your-face protest-punk, they knew they’d draw some attention, CBS News correspondent Charlie D’Agata reports. That was the point.

But when they chose the most sacred site in the Russian Orthodox Church to bang out a flash protest song against Putin, Russian authorities decided it was time for a crackdown.

“We accept our ethical misdemeanor, but an ethical misdemeanor should not be a cause of criminal punishment,” Tolokonnikova said through a translator before the verdict.

Pussy Riot was arrested in March and sentenced to 2 years in prison for their protest music. You can read more here.

On 13 September, English PEN launched ‘Poems for Pussy Riot‘ in support of three members of the Russian punk band –  Nadezhda Tolokonnikova, Maria Alyokhina and Yekaterina Samutsevich – who are currently serving a  two year prison sentence.

Sophie Robinson’s poem ‘Free Pussy’ appeared on the English PEN Campaigns blog on Thursday 27 September: one of 45 poems posted there that have been written in support of Pussy Riot, accompanied by photos of their writers in balaclavas – or with knickers on their heads.
